A Legacy of Impact

Key milestones from our founding to today.

2011
Starting Point
Sacred Heart University (SHU), made possible by a founding gift from Barbara & Brad Evans, established an affiliate Horizons program serving K–8 students in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Horizons Sacred Heart University (HSHU) is the first program in Connecticut to be hosted at a private university of higher education.
2012
Kindergarten

The program commences with the creation of two kindergarten classes, under the guidance of the program’s first Executive Director, Greg Middleton.

2018
Fundraising

The HSHU program begins its public fundraising efforts with its inaugural Horizons SHU Golf Outing, held at the SHU Great River Country Club.

2019
Notre Dame

Notre Dame High School of Fairfield launches an additional Horizons affiliate (HND) serving Bridgeport, CT. This program will also focus on high school extra-schooling (grades 9th through 12th). The programs collaborate to have all graduates of HSHU matriculate into the HND high school program.

2020
Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic, while forcing the suspension of in-person assistance, allows for the program to pivot to support students in year-round extra-schooling by using on-line instruction.

2021
10th Anniversary

HSHU celebrates its 10th anniversary by establishing the Evans Society for past HSHU board Members, allowing for continued stewardship of the program mission and message.

2022
SEL Focus

A renewed focus on SEL (Social Emotional Learning) is provided by a grant from ARPA.  This allowed for HSHU to develop the best practices, support, and training necessary for assisting students in the Bridgeport community to complement academic enrichment services.

2023
Benefit

HSHU holds its inaugural benefit gala, “Connecting Bridgeport”, focused on driving additional community support for the program’s mission.

Notre Dame High School is purchased by Sacred Heart University. In doing so, the HND program is merged into HSHU, resulting in largest single-site K-8 program within the entire Horizons network.

2025
High School

HSHU begins its entry into providing Pre-K and High School support, by accepting 10 children into its pilot Pre-K class and matriculating over 20 students into its high school program.
